Handmade Wooden Kitchen Table

At the beginning of the summer, my husband started on a new project: a kitchen table.  We had been using a retro red table from his Grandma Gen for the past seven years.  You really couldn’t get a table to suit me more than that table; the problem was that it was falling apart and the seats were cracking.  In addition, it was a fairly small table and we knew we would need something larger once Emden was out of a high chair.

And so a new project was born for my husband, and like all projects, it took much longer than anticipated.  We thought it would be a month before we were able to feast on the new table, but in reality, summer was coming to an end before we welcomed it into our home.

I didn’t write a tutorial up for this one, because, well, there are a ton of steps and I didn’t do any of them!  Instead, I thought I’d provide you with some pictures to show the process!

The top piece of wood is what all the boards started out looking like- very rough

The stack of wood my husband started off with that was given to him by our friend. Thanks Tyler!

Planing the rough wood several times to make them smooth

Planing takes a long time, each side has to be done multiple times and that adds up!

After gluing between all the boards he clamped them together and let set overnight which turned into a couple of days before he was able to find time to get back to this project

Gluing a second board around all the edges to make it appear to be a thicker table. He only had enough clamps to do one side each night to let dry.

We bought our chairs online from Nebraska Furniture Mart.

Our table in real life with a dirty floor and highchair always accompanying it.

I wasn’t really able to get the pretty shots I wanted of the table because, well, the kitchen table is kind of our family hub and so there seems to always be toys, smears of who knows what, and drinks cluttering its surface.  Yes, I know I can clean it off, but then I’ve got to do the floor too, and frankly, that just seems like too much work for a couple of pictures!

Anyway, I LOVE our new table and Jeff did an amazing job on it!
