Tuesday Tip: Glasses Protect Against Pink Eye

This spring Rylan got pink eye for the first time.  Unfortunately, it was a bad week for us all because we all had a cold/sinus/allergy related illness too.  This meant for me a long grueling week full of wiping runny noses and washing hands on top of a pounding headache caused by a clogged nose.  I remember wishing I were a kid again so that I could just lay on the couch and watch TV all day and do nothing, absolutely nothing.

Even though I did my best to keep all of our germs from spreading to one another, it was only a matter of time before little Owie got pink eye too!  Back to the doctor’s office.  Yippee!  I was not happy at all about this visit because we had already spent enough money on medical expenses the past two weeks, but I decided to play the role of a compassionate mommy and packed everyone up to get Owen checked out.

I’m very glad I did because not only did Owen have ear infections in both of his ears (in addition to pink eye), but the doctor also gave me a good tip.  He said that during his first year of being a pediatric doctor he got pink eye ten times!  Whoa!  Since then, he wears non-prescription glasses to try to prevent getting it and it works!  What a smart guy!  The glasses help fingers covered in germs from touching your eye, including your own, and also protect from sneezes being launched in there too.  Gross!

Now wouldn’t you know I have non-prescription glasses sitting in a drawer, aching to be worn!  I’m going to let you in on a little secret…I love glasses!  I have wanted glasses since I was in high school but the only problem is, I have 20/20 vision.  Bummer!  Well years ago that didn’t stop me and I got a couple pair of non-prescription glasses.  There’s something about putting those tiny rimmed spectacles on that makes me feel more like myself.  However, I always felt dumb wearing them around because I didn’t have a reason to wear them, besides the fact I thought they looked cute.  If anyone asked, I knew I couldn’t lie and would have to tell them they’re not real.

Anyway, I never really wore them much because I decided they weren’t worth the embarrassment, but now…now I do have a real reason to wear them!  So, if you ever see me wearing glasses you’ll know that someone in our family must have pink eye.

Perhaps you’re a closet glasses lover too or maybe you’re one of the lucky ones who actually has bad eyesight!  Ha, now that’s not something you hear everyday!  Either way, the next time someone you know gets pink eye, protect yourself by wearing glasses!

DISCLAIMER: If you wear glasses and still get pink eye do not blame me!  Obviously, this is not a fool proof method, but just a simple preventative method, like washing your hands is with catching a cold.
