Homemade Turtles

I decided to make some homemade turtles for Jeff because Turtles are one of his favorite candies and I thought it looked pretty easy and would save us some money.  Well, they ended up being pretty easy, but I’m not sure how much money I ended up saving because I know the bag of pecan halves was $5 alone.  Granted, I have over half a bag left over.  Regardless, I will make these again because they were de-lish!  If you crave turtles too, read on to find out how to make your own!

  • wax paper
  • butter
  • one bag of caramels
  • one bag of chocolate chips
  • pecan halves (will not use a whole bag)
Game Plan

1. Roll out a sheet of wax paper and lightly coat with butter or cooking spray to help keep the caramel from sticking

2. Melt the caramels in a microwave bowl.  Add two tablespoons of milk to make it creamier and runnier.

3. While the caramels are melting, lay out pecan halves in groupings of 3 or 4.

4.  Pour melted caramel in the middle of each pecan grouping.

5.  Melt chocolate chips in the microwave.  Add two tablespoons of vegetable shortening to thin the mixture if needed.

6. Pour the melted chocolate on top of the caramel and spread out with a spoon if needed.

7.  These are homemade, so don’t feel like they need to look perfect.  The pecans do not have to be all the way covered either.

8.  Let cool in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes.

9.  Let them come to room temperature before eating.  The caramel will be softer to eat and easier to pull off of the wax paper.

A couple of variations for this recipe:  use almonds instead of pecans; pour melted chocolate on the wax paper first and then the pecans, caramel, and melted chocolate go on top of that (wouldn’t have to worry about the caramel sticking);and for a more uniformed look, make the turtles in muffin tins.
